About Us
Who We Are
The Impossible Dream Machine is a research and intelligence platform working to uncover hidden patterns in ALS. By connecting patient experience with clinical, genomic, biomarker, and real-world data, IDM seeks to improve the understanding of disease progression, identify meaningful patient subtypes and outliers, and generate insights that can support therapeutic development and more effective clinical trials.
Why IDM Exists
ALS is highly heterogeneous, but many research and clinical-trial models still evaluate people with the disease as one broad population. IDM believes that identifying distinct progression patterns, biological subgroups, unusual responders, long survivors, and other meaningful outliers can help reveal signals that conventional approaches may miss.
How IDM Is Different
- Begins with clinically meaningful questions
- Connects data that is often fragmented
- Focuses on heterogeneity and outliers
- Integrates data science with clinical interpretation
- Includes lived experience without confusing anecdote with evidence
- Translates research toward therapeutic and clinical-trial applications
- Uses storytelling to make complex work understandable and visible
Principles
Scientific Integrity
Make claims only to the level supported by evidence.
Patient Respect
Treat people as partners and individuals, not simply data points.
Responsible Data Use
Respect consent, privacy, data-use agreements, and institutional requirements.
Collaboration
Complement the ALS ecosystem rather than duplicate it.
Actionable Research
Prioritize work that can inform research decisions, biomarkers, trials, and therapies.
